In case you missed the meeting today…

October 18, 2006

We held a gallery meeting today, 10/18/06, to discuss a few things.

The panels for the walls are in the process of being constructed- as soon as I hear something I will let you all know when we will receive them.

So far, our first show’s theme is going to be the teacher’s artwork.  Two out of three have already agreed, I will talk to Chris Houston and see if he wants to participate.

We are going to have monthly gallery openings Wednesday nights in the library.  Ilyssa will make posters to advertise within the school, and I will call the local paper to advertise in the community.  As of now, we are not sure how we will cover costs for things like this.  Any ideas???

We’ll try for First Wednesdays, in accordance with First Fridays downtown.  By the way, I suggest you all try and go see the gallery openings-it will put great ideas in your head!

And lastly, so I know exactly who is participating in the gallery, if everyone could please type a quick post on this blog, even if it is just your name and your intention on participating, that would help me out a lot.

Thanks!

~Laura

October 18th meeting

October 17, 2006

Hey everyone,

I’m holding a meeting tomorrow, October 18th after school in the library.  It shouldn’t take too long, for those of you who have other commitments.  Basically I want to have the meeting I tried to call last week, but the announcements did not reach many members.  Also, Mark is not available for us to do this tomorrow, but if anyone is interested in assisting me with some small tasks for the mural, please let me know.  If anyone is interested, I could definitly use some people to roll out and maybe glaze some tiles, and eventually (possibly) cut some mirror.  Let me know if you’re interested.  Hope to see everyone at the meeting tomorrow.

Getting started…

October 13, 2006

Hey there gallery members!

I tried to call a meeting on Monday the 9th.  However, the new televised morning announcements seem to be causing communication problems as they are not currently working in every homeroom.  I am hoping to have a full meeting next wednesday, please let me know if you cannot make this meeting.

The directors met last week to make some decesions and figure out the direction we want the art gallery to go.  Basically, we discussed the theme and hopeful date of our first show, how we want to present our gallery opening, and how we want to utilize the internet tools Mrs. Valenza has provided, such as this blog and our Flickr account.

In accordance with First Fridays downtown, we’d like to set a monthly date to have a gallery opening for each new show.  Our goal for the first show is early November, (first Mondays? Wednesdays? Anything??)  provided the panels are made and we are physically prepared.  If it is possible (we know insurance may be an issue), we’d like to showcase the artwork of the teachers.  We realize that as artist, we’d be nothing without our education, so we want to show where we came from, so to speak.

If that is not possible due to insurance reasons and such, our “Plan B” for our first show is a “Best Of” theme.  Anyone involved in the gallery will be encouraged to submit one piece that, in their opinion, is their most succesful or favorite piece.  It can be a finished project, a sketch, a gesture drawing, anything as long as it is your own.

As for the online resources, the blog is our best communication tool.  I don’t know how many outside people will view it, so the focus is a way for me to tell the rest of the members when the next meeting is, things discussed at previous meetings in case you missed them, etc.  Checking the blog once a week or so is a VERY GOOD IDEA for all gallery members.

The Flickr account is not so straighforward, however.  When the directors met, someone brought up a point saying that if all the artwork is showcased online, we may not have a very good turnout at gallery openings.  We would like to isolate the Flickr account to use to showcase previous shows and collections.

I would LOVE feedback from anyone and everyone on these issues, either post here on the blog or find me in school, either one is perfect.  I’ll give everyone a definite date on the next meeting either Monday or Tuesday of next week, hope to see you there!

~Laura.

Welcome to our GalleryBlog!

September 27, 2006

This blog will record our experience and help us to plan as we build a new gallery in Springfield’s library.  The gallery, located in the quiet reading area, will feature the work of Springfield’s amazing student artists.  At the moment we are planning themed shows and shows highlighting the works of individual seniors.

Laura is in the midst of creating a mosaic gallery sign.  The panels should arrive next week.

Evelyn posted the first work in our corresponding Flickr gallery.

Much more to come!
